A Special Evening with Alison Stendahl – Fri, Jan 16

Turkish ScarfWhat Connects the Turkish Scarf Project, Mathematics Education, Theology, Faith and the UCC?  Find out at a dinner & discussion with UCC Missionary to Turkey, Alison Stendahl, on Friday, January 16th.

Director of Outreach Ministries, Lucy Samara, is pleased to announce a great opportunity to gather for a delicious dinner and interesting program with a UCC Missionary! This opportunity came to us recently from the Mission Department of the Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ. In response, Lucy, Donna Lee and members of the Mission Committee are hosting a dinner and discussion program on Friday, January 16th at 6pm at First Congregational Church.  All are invited and an RSVP is needed so that we will have enough servings of a fabulous meal that our volunteer group is making. Please RSVP to Lucy as soon as possible.

Global Min UCCOur special guest, Alison Stendahl, who will be speaking in churches in New England during January and February, will retire this summer after completing nearly 34 years of service in the United Church of Christ and Global Ministries mission schools in Turkey. She has been a math teacher, head of the Math Department, and for many years the Academic Dean of the mission school in Uskudar, Istanbul, Turkey. She has also served in religious communities in Istanbul: as a participant in a Christian-Muslim Relationship Program and as a developer of the church history program at Bithynia Bible College.

Stendahl grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has bachelors degrees in mathematics education, an M.Ed. degree in curriculum, and instruction from higher education institutions in Minnesota and Washington state. She also has an M.A. degree from Andover Newton Theological School where she studied in 1989-91. Alison will have dinner with us and will talk about her extensive mission experience on behalf of the UCC in Turkey. Alison has also served on the Board of the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon. She can speak with us about her understanding of events in the Middle East.

For many years, quite a few women in our congregation have bought and worn “Turkish Scarves” in support of the UCC mission work in Turkey. Dee and Bob Keller, retired UCC missionaries to Turkey who now live in Vermont, will accompany Alison and will join in our discussion. Please RSVP and plan to take part in this interesting program!
